Buddha's Life

- Buddha was a Spiritual Teacher in Ancient India
- Founded the religion Buddhism
- Buddha is also known as "The Supreme Buddha" to his followers
- Historians say that he lived in 563 B.C. to 483 B.C.
- Prime sources for Buddha's life are the Buddhist texts
- His monks and him spent 4 months every year discussing and practicing his teachings
- Monks throughout thousands of years preserve his teachings
- Buddha was raised in "modern day" Nepal
- His father and mother were king and queen of the Shakya nation
- His father was married to a princess
- His mom died giving birth to him
- Buddha(being a prince) had three palaces
- Buddha's original name was Siddhartha
- He married his cousin Yasodhara and they had a son
- Buddha spent 29 years as a prince but believed that wealth was not one of his goals in life
- When on a trip and was inspired to live the life of an ascetic
- Buddha escaped from his life as a prince.... which is known as "The Great Departure"
- In the last 45 years of his life, he spent time for his teachings and traveling to sacred places
- Buddha died at the age of 80
